The Cars Australians Were Looking At in September 2026

September’s Motor Scout data gives us an interesting look at what Australian car buyers were researching and, more importantly, what they ultimately chose.

Toyota, Kia and GWM were the three most enquired-about brands during the month, showing that established favourites and newer players are continuing to compete for buyers’ attention.

But when it came to the cars customers actually bought, five models stood out.

The top 3 most enquired-about brands

1. Toyota

Toyota took the top spot for enquiries in September, continuing to be one of the biggest names on Australian car buyers’ shortlists.

2. Kia

Kia followed closely behind, with its broad range of SUVs, passenger cars and electrified models giving buyers plenty of options to consider.

3. GWM

GWM rounded out the top three, showing the growing interest in newer brands and the increasing choice available to Australian buyers.

The 5 most popular cars sold through Motor Scout

When it came to the cars buyers ultimately purchased through Motor Scout, the list looked a little different.

1. Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 took out the number one spot in September. The popular SUV continues to appeal to buyers looking for practicality, space and an increasingly electrified driving experience.

2. Jaecoo J5

The Jaecoo J5 claimed second place, continuing its strong performance with Motor Scout buyers. It’s a newer name in the Australian market, but its combination of features, value and choice of powertrains is clearly getting attention.

3. Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger was the highest-selling ute on the list, taking third place overall. Its versatility continues to make it a popular choice for Australians who need a vehicle that can handle everything from the daily commute to towing and weekends away.

4. MG4 EV Urban

The MG4 EV Urban came in fourth and was the only fully electric model in the top five. Its inclusion highlights the growing number of buyers considering an EV when choosing their next car.

5. Chery Tiggo 4

Rounding out the top five was the Chery Tiggo 4.  Another newer entrant competing for Australian buyers, the Tiggo 4 combines SUV practicality with an available hybrid option.

What do the top five have in common?

There’s an interesting trend hiding in September’s top five.

Every model has an electrified option.

The RAV4 is available as a hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The Jaecoo J5 comes with petrol, hybrid and EV options. The Ford Ranger is available as a plug-in hybrid, the MG4 EV Urban is fully electric, and the Chery Tiggo 4 is available as a hybrid.  That doesn’t mean every customer bought the electrified version. But it does show how much the new-car landscape has changed.

Buyers are increasingly able to choose the type of car they want while also choosing how they want it powered.

From shortlist to driveway

What’s particularly interesting is the difference between the brands generating the most enquiries and the cars ultimately being purchased. Toyota, Kia and GWM were the most enquired-about brands, but the top five sold models included Jaecoo, Ford, MG and Chery. It shows that researching a new car doesn’t always mean sticking with the first brand you consider. As buyers compare pricing, features, powertrains and dealer offers, their shortlist can change along the way. And that’s exactly why comparing your options before you buy can be worthwhile.
